Most Texas rivers were either too shallow or too unreliable for shipping goods, and dirt roads turned into mud during wet weather. As a result, moving people and goods was a time-consuming and expensive. Railroads promised cheap, fast, and reliable transportation. It was also cheaper to ship goods by by railroad than wagon.
