In the exposition, we learn that the narrator, Montresor, has been betrayed by his old friend, Fortunato. Now Montresor won't stop at anything to get revenge.
In the first rising action, the narrator, Montresor, persuades Fortunato to go to Montresor's house to fetch the amontillado to help his cough; However, Montresor has another plan in mind.
Fortunato continues to try different wine to help his cough, nonetheless, it is not improving. Fortunato then follows Montresor into the catacombs to receive the amontillado; Although, he supposedly has an engagement to Luchesi. Montresor only uses Luchesi as a leverage to get Fortunato to do what he wants.
Montresor persuades Fortunato to get into the room.
Once montresor manages to trap Fortunato, he begins to use the trowel he hid in his cloak, and stack bricks blocking the doorway so Fortunato would be blocked in.
Montresor is content knowing that Fortunato will be undiscovered for at least half a century.
