  • To the citizens of this village, the presence of the black box is a dreadful time because of the the horrendous events that occur after the drawing.Even after so many years of the lottery tradition, the elders continue to keep up with the tradition. Therefore, traditions are not always acceptable throughout time. Shirley Jackson is trying to convey that traditions should be questioned especially if they involve threatening another’s life.
  • To us the summer is a joyful time because we have freedom to do whatever we want. In this case, summer is used in a peculiar this story Mr.Summers is a civic activity director,and the lottery being one of the many activities he directs, is a more dreadful time.Therefore, joyful times in one place can be distressing times elsewhere.
  • The definition of Delacroix means “of the cross” meaning that this name is a very holy and Christian, but what Mrs.Delacroix did to Mrs.Tessie was very much the opposite of her name. Therefore, not everything that is claimed as innocent is during a turn of events. Shirley Jackson is trying to portray that not everything is as it claims to be.
  • In our world winning the lottery means that someone wins a large sum of money that could impact one’s life dramatically. In this story the lottery can also dramatically impact one’s life but not in a favorable way. This lottery can end someone’s life.Therefore, Shirley Jackson is trying to portray that not all huge and life changing events in one’s life are not always positive and can have consequences.
  • Graves is a very dark name with an unpleasant meaning. In this story he helps Mr.Summers with the drawing that involves young children’s death. Mr. Graves being fine with that idea is being malicious with the child.Therefore, not all death only affects old people but children.
  • The definition of being an optimistic person is,”reflecting a favorable view of events and conditions and the expectation of a positive outcome” Therefore if one was to see the glass half empty the would see the negative outcome of negative events.
