There were two tribes, one of them lived in the Waitakere forest on Auckland 's west coast while the other lived on the south side in the Hunua forest. This made sure that the tribes were mostly separated and prevented fights
On dark nights, young members of the two tribes would often race to the other iwi and take a token as proof . This was a game that they established and would take place usually only on moonless nights.
However, one night as the tribe of Waitakere set out on their journey, the chiefs son returned empty handed-this led the other youngsters to make fun of him. But the next night, the chief's son didn't return at all which left all his friends worried.
