Storyboard Text

  • When people tell me that I can’t succeed, is when I notice that I work my hardest. For the next few months I delved deep into computer science courses and tried to learn several different programming languages and I loved it. The only problem that I was always alarmingly aware of is the missing presence of women on the Internet. Similarly to Amanda Hess, I don’t feel that my gender should affect what I am able to do in my life.
  • It terrifies me to think that if this problem isn't fixed in the years to come, women all around the world will be forced to either face harassment and the chance of placing themselves in danger, just to stay within the expectations held in our society. However like its said it is simply "impossible to be offline". Our worlds are so deeply intertwined with technology that we face no choice but the harsh reality behind using the internet.
  • When I continued to conduct my own research I found out that the number of computer science degrees awarded to women in 2011 was not even 12%. When looking at the reading I was able to see that there is only 22.5% of women holding a job in computer science. Finally I was able to realize that there is a direct correlation of not having equality in the workplace. Problems like online harassment and gender inequality are both major issue in the work place.
  • In the end, my main motivation of wanting to become a computer scientist is that not only want to have a successful future, but I want to be able to be a voice for the millions of women that are ignored in the technology industry. I hope that I will be able to keep my stubborn personality and use it to urge people to realize the unfair struggles between gender equality on the internet and in the workplace in general.
  • Throughout the comparison of my personal story with the story presented in the textbook I was able to present why it is important for people, women in particular, to keep going even if people tell you that you will not be successful. With a mindset to keep going, women should be able to successfully address the social problems that currently surround topics that are normally considered as taboo to our gender. I also believe that it is important to work to this goal because I can be used as an example to other women. No one should be forced to act or think in a certain way, just because it is not considered to be a norm in our society.
  • I don't want to be a computer scientist just because people believe that I would recive an unfair advantage just because I am a woman. I wanted people to understand that as a woman I was able to achieve my goals due to my work ethic. Women are just as competent as men in areas of work that are normally limited to males, so it is extremely important to motivate girls at a young age that it is normal to want to be independent and successful.
