  • Meme Ortiz
  • Cathy Queen of Cats
  • Our Good Day
  • In Meme Ortiz, Esperanza meets Meme and "out front there are 21 steps, all lopsided and jutting like crooked teeth" (Cisneros 22). This is a simile because it compares the steps to crooked teeth using the word "like". This because the steps aren't perfectly lined up like crooked teeth.
  • In Cathy Queen of Cats, Esperanza describes her cats "asleep like little doughnuts"(Cisernos 13) This is a simile because the word "like" is used to compare the sleeping cats to little doughnuts. They do this because cats usually sleep in little balls that look like doughnuts.
  • In Our Good Day, Esperanza and her new friends purchase a bicycle. They are riding it through the neighborhood and "past my [Esperanza] house, sad and red"(Cisneros 16). This is an example of personification because it's giving an emotion to a house. The author gives the house this emotion because the house isn't a pretty house to look at.
