Thirty-year-old Guy Montag had 10 years of experience under his belt when it came to being a fireman. He enjoyed it and found pleasure in it. The smell of kerosene lingered as he wandered the streets.
Gotta clean em out both ways..
You guys aren't M.D.s?!
Clarisse McClellan was considered a peculiar girl and was described with having a "face like a snow covered island." She often called herself 17 and crazy. Montag did not know this at the time, but it was their initial meeting that would make Montag question his entire existence.
Do you remember anything?
When Montag returned home, he found his wife, Mildred, wearing thimble wasps and laid out on the bed unresponsive. Next to her, was an opened empty bottle of sleeping pills.
You're not in love with anyone!
Do I actually love Mildred?
Soon after Montag called the emergency operators, two men showed up with machinery to help Mildred. However, they were quit unusual in the sense that they were dressed as handymen rather than medics. They powered the two stomach pumps and began injecting her with a contra-sedative.
Soon, Mildred awoke and was in the mood to eat. When Montag confronted her about the situation, she had no recollection of what happened. She simply began working the mechanical handed toaster.
Later, Montag ran into Clarisse where she was standing in the rain and playing with dandelions. She mentions how he must try everything once and also explained how dandelions work. She says something to him that made him question everything he ever knew.
