I picked the lottery for a symbol. I picked the lottery for a symbol because in the story, the lottery represents tradition. Every year the town gets together and they have the black box, pick names and sheets of paper out of it and in the end someone gets stoned to death. I know this because in line the author describes, "The original paraphernalia for the lottery had been lost long ago, and the black box now resting on thestool had been put into use even before Old Man Warner, the oldest man in town, was born." This quote is explaining how the lottery was tradition in the town because they had been doing it ever since the oldest man in town was born.
