Storyboard Text

  • Communication Activity-Role Play
  • 1. Okay. For our first scenario, I would like you Carl to pretend that Susan is blocking the doorway that you are trying to get through. What is a "cotton ball" way to ask her to move?
  • 2. Hey Susan, I wanted to go to the common room, could you please excuse me?
  • Communication Activity-Role Play
  • 2. I felt good when he said that to me!
  • 1. Great job Carl! Susan, how did Carl's answer make you feel?
  • Communication Activity-Role Play
  • 1. Awesome! Now Susan, I want you to pretend that Carl took your lunch box instead of his by accident. How could you ask for it back using cotton ball language?
  • 2. Hey Carl why did you take my lunch?! Give it back now!!
  • Communication Activity-Role Play
  • Oh no, I feel guilty for making Carl feel bad.
  • 3. Right. That is an example of sandpaper talk Susan because it made Carl feel bad. We do not want to talk to our friends like this.
  • 1. Okay. Carl, how did Susan's response make you feel?
  • 2. I feel bad that I used "sandpaper talk" to Carl. But I am just so used to talking to those around me like that. It is hard to change. Plus, everyone around me is usually mean to me to so I don't know if  I want to change the way I talk.
  • Group Discussion
  • 4. I felt bad when Susan said that. I can understand that it is hard to change the way to you talk Susan. But it is still not fair to talk to me like that.
  • 1. Okay, let's talk about how we felt during this activity. Susan, would you like to start?
  • Group Discussion
  • 1. Good job today everyone. I think an important thing to take away from today's activity is that using "sandpaper talk" makes everyone feel bad, even the person using it. Which leads to more "sandpaper talk"
  • Yes, I understand that.
  • 2. It made me feel really bad.
  • The group moves on to the discussion portion.
  • 3. Okay, thank you for sharing. Carl, is there anything you would like to say?
  • I guess that makes sense.
