  • He rising action was when the whole Hutchinson family stepped up onto the podium and got their slips of paper. People in the crowd were also hoping their friends didn't get picked.
  • The tension in the audience and the Hutchenson family rose as everyone had picked their piece of paper. As everyone had shown their piece of paper except Tessie, it was suspicious and Bill snatched the paper of her hand and showed it to the entire city.
  • Tessie had the black dot on her slip of paper. She started making a fuss, saying again and again, "It's not fair! It's not right!"
  • Everyone picks up the stones lying around and begins to throw them at Tessie, even her own family
