Odysseus had been stuck on Calypso's Island for seven years, wanting to go back to his son and wife. Meanwhile,back in Ithaca, suitors are lining up to marry Penelope who still has faith in Odysseus.
Whilst Odysseus is on the shore, Hermes, messenger of the gods comes, and begs Calypso to free Odysseus. She does, but only to prevent angering Zeus, a mighty God. She then prepares Odysseus for his journey across the seas.
Odysseus is embarking on his journey back home, despite knowing the harms he may face. He shows great courage in the face of danger, and he is willing to endure pain if ti means returning to his faithful wife, and obtaining his power once more.
