This scene starts to make Macbeth disbelieve his trusty companion. With the desire for power and the prophecy from Macbeth, he starts to lie about his destiny.

A shaken Macbeth returns and informs Lady Macbeth he killed King Duncan but only to found out that he didn't leave the murderer weapon at the scene and will not go back and leave it there. Macbeth character is weak and powerless which Lady Macbeth have been taking advantage of.
A horrified Macduff reports that the King has been murdered. The blame is on the guards and Macbeth killed them to show loyalty and anger to the King. Malcolm and Donalbain decided to flee. This shows the characterization of Malcolm and Donalbain and Macduff are weak.

This scene is when Macbeth finally crowned as the king. This shows his character as a very selfish leader because he doesn't want to do any of the dirty work in order to become what he wants. After becoming what he wants, he owns it all to himself.
