  • Battle of Marathon
  • Battle of Thermopylae
  • King Darius asked Greece for tributes after the Ionian war. The Greeks refused so the Persians sent their army to attack. 
  • Battle of Salamis
  • We did it!
  • In 490 BCE The Persian Amry fought the Athenians, and the Athenians won in a stunning victory.
  • Battle of Plataea
  • In 480 BCE, King Xerxes from Persia sent an army to Greece. The Spartan King, Leonidas, could only hold them back. The Greeks lost The Battle of Thermopylae.
  • Effects
  • After the battle of Thermopylae, many Athenians fled. Two weeks after, they burned down Athens. The navy leader, Themistocles, thought of a plan to defeat the Persians. They won the battle.
  • In 479 BCE The Battle of Plataea took place near Thebes. The Persian King Xerxes fought the Athenians and Spartans. The Greeks won and the Greeks won the Persian Wars and drove their army from Greece.
  • Both Athens and Sparta were able to join forces to defeat the Persian Empire. After the wars, Athens would become the center of Greek culture and expand its own empire. The victory perserved the Greeks' independance and kept Persia from conquering all of Europe.
