Leisel's mother planned on giving her and her little brother away to a foster family so that they could be safe from the war and because their mother couldn't take care of them anymore . On the way to the foster family her brother died on the train . Alone, she was welcomed into the family which consisted of an old man and an old woman, Rosa Hubermann and her nice husband, Hans Hubermann.
After getting to the Hubermann's Liesel got interested in a book that she stole from one of the grave diggers that buried her brother. Liesel tried reading the book but she couldn't because she didn't know how to read, so she asked her new papa Hans Hubermann to teach her how to read and write.
They started with learning the letters in the alphabet it wasnt easy but Liesel refused to give up and eventually became very good at reading and also writing.
When Hans Hubermann decides to let Max Vandenburg, a Jew, stay in there basement. Rosa Hubermann begins to feel worried and scared her foster family will get caught for hiding a Jew in there basement .
In the beginning Liesel was suspicious of Max because he was a stranger to her, but soon they started to get to know each other and eventual started sharing their stories. As a gift Max gave her a black notebook for her to write her own story.
In order to protect the Hubermann's, Max decides to leave their home so they wont get caught for hiding a Jew in their basement, but instead Max ends up being caught by the Nazi and has to walk through Himmel Street where the Hubermann's lived on, in order to go to a concentration camp.
