  • Yellow journalism is exaggerated news.
  • The USS Maine was a ship that McKinley put into the city’s harbor to protect American’s property.
  • McKinley did not want to go to war and hesitated.
  • Our real eminence rests in the victories in peace, not those of war!
  • Cubans used yellow journalism to hopefully bring the US in to help them.
  • McKinley sent a list of demands to Spain.
  • On February 15, 1898, the USS Maine exploded.The explosion killed over 250 Americans. They blamed the Spanish, but we now think it was caused by a fire.
  • The US signed the Treaty of Paris with Spain in December, 1898.
  • He finally decided that he could not resist the people's cries for war, so on April 11, 1898, he sent a war message to congress.
  • For $20 million, Spain gave up the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and the Pacific island of Guam.
  • The list included compensation for the Maine, an end to reconcentration camps, a truce in Cuba, and Cuban independence. All were accepted but the last.
  • Cuba’s independence was recognized when the Treaty or Paris was signed.
  • These became “unincorporated” territories of the US, which meant that these lands were not intended for eventual statehood.
