In 1800 France, live the Loisels. Madame Loisel is unhappy with her status in life, and dreams of a better life of more than what she has.
Monsieur Loisel comes home one day with an invitation to a party, But to his surprise his wife is upset because she has nothing to wear to the party.
Monsieur Loisel gives his wife money to buy a dress, but she has no jewelry to go with it. So she goes to her well off friend who agrees to let her borrow a diamond necklace for the party.

When the Loisels return home from the party, Madame Loisel notices that the necklace is gone. The Loisels search for the diamond necklace but can't find it.
They decide to go to a jeweler and find a replacement for the necklace, without telling the friend about what really happened. The new necklace costs a lot of money, causing the Loisels to go into great debt and live in poverty for the next 10 years.
10 years later Madame Loisel runs into her friend, and decides to tell her the truth about the necklace. When her friend hears this, she feels very bad for the Loisels, telling her that the original necklace was only fake.
