On May 7, 2018 Attorney Jeff Sessions announced that there would be a "zero tolerance" at the border. This meant families would be separated at all cost if they were caught crossing the border illegally.

Children were sent to facilities with all the other children and were held in cages. Recordings came out of children crying and pleading for their families.

During the mid-1800s, the United States government created boarding schools designed for Native American children to go to. This was done in order to "kill the Indian, save the man."
In June of 2018, President Donald Trump issued an executive order ending the Zero Tolerance policy that was separating families at the border, but this does not end all of family separation. Children are still being separated in the US and it is an ongoing problem.
