Storyboard Text

  • The Crucible by Arthur Miller (Aryan Patel)
  •  The witch hunt that stifled society with dissension and plagued every citizen with fear is the conflict of The Crucible. The conflict represents the theme of veracity versus deception (dishonesty) in the actions and statements of all the characters. In act 1 of The Crucible,it states"Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters.(Miller,468)". This citation shows that Abigail is lying about the events that occurred in the forest as she asked Tituba for a charm of death, although, when confronted she blamed Tituba of witchcraft. My comic depicts the girls in the forest which ignited the trials of witchcraft in Salem.
  • Abigail Williams is a major character that is very salient to the plot of the story as the majority of the conflicts were initiated by Abigail. In act 3 a specific stage direction of the textstates, "Abigail, with a weird, wild, chilling cry, screams up to the ceiling." This is an example of Abigail indirectly, but deliberately, falsely accusing others of witchcraft which has directly led to the major conflict of the story. Abigail is acting as if Mary Warren has forced her spirit onto her, as Mary Warren testified against her in court. Leading to Abigail to act like she was being affected by witchcraft, proving to the court her claims of witchcraft. Abigail's false accusations, deceptions, and manipulation of others play a prodigious aspect in the conflict of the story. In the comic, I have depicted Abigail acting as if she was put under Mary Warren spirit as she did in court.
  • A major complication that has occurred in The Crucible, adding more complexity to plot and conflict, is the arrest of Elizabeth (Goody) Proctor. In The Crucible it states in act 3,“ Proctor: Who charged her? Cheever: Why Abigail Williams charge her.(Miller,499)”. This citation shows that Elizabeth is arrested due to accusations by Abigail, Elizabeth's arrest contributes to the conflict by directly involving the Proctor family in the witch trials. John Proctor the protagonist of the story is now directly implicated in the witch trials as his wife is arrested because of Abigail's accusations of witchcraft. This contributed to the plot as it is another example of dishonest in the text and it has directly entwined the protagonist to the conflict of the play. My picture depicts officials of the court/authorities arresting Elizabeth while John is watching helplessly in the background.
  • The conflict of The Crucible has been solved by the end of the play. At the end of the play, it is divulged to the reader that Abigail and Mercy Lewis have secretly left Salem. This causes the conflict of witchcraft to end in Salem as Abigail and Mercy falsified majority of the statements in courts to accuse others of witchcraft in Salem. As both Abigail and Mercy are gone this discredits their testimonies as it could be perceived they left to evade the truth and their own potential prosecution in the court of law. As well as, there will be no accusations of witchcraft anymore as the leader of the girls has fled causing the conflict of witchcraft to be resolved. My picture depicts Abigail and Mercy fleeing Salem by ship which is believed to be how they have escaped the town of Salem.
  • A society plagued with fear, a society entwined in intrepidation, a society stifled by dissension.
