Storyboard Text

  • Today we will be discussing Kent vs United States
  • The primary legal issue is Juveniles and Serious Crimes
  • Here are the facts
  • 1. Kent (16), who had been on probation since he was 14 for burglary and theft, was arrested and charged with three home burglaries, three robberies, and two counts of rape in Washington, D.C 2. Because of the seriousness of the charges and Kent's history, the prosecutor moved to try Kent in adult court 3.  Kent went to adult court and was found guilty. His sentence was 30-90 years in prison. 4. Kent appealed against Court, reasoning that as minor, he should not be tried in adult court
  • Let's see what the Supreme Court decided
  • We rule against Kent. A minor can be tried and punished as an adult. However, when making this decision, judges must consider:seriousness of the crime; the juvenile's age; and the defendant's criminal background and mental state
