Haden Edwards, did not like that he did not like that he didn't get any of the land the old three hundred had, so he started to tax them more each year until they would be forced to leave.
The old villagers did not like that though they already owned the land, they still had to pay for it. So when Edwards son in law became the mayor, they took the problem to Mexican officials who immediately removed him from office.
Edwards didn't like that, so he started a riot. Stephen F. Austin heard of this and sent some of his own men to fight off the riot along with the Mexican government. When news reached Edward of their coming, the riot disbanded, and he fled Texas.
