4.6 billion years ago CO2 and other gases were introduced into the atmosphere. It was mainly CO2 and water vapour.
As simple organisms start to photosynthesize the CO2 levels start to decrease.
The animals who eat these plants then get some of the carbon transferred into their tissue.
The skeletons then over a million years build up at the bottom of the ocean.
They also get covered in layers of fine sediment. Trapping CO2 which then becomes sedimentary carbonate rocks.
The rocks also traps the gas underneath the rocks causing a loss in CO2
