  • You will work despite how tired you are so that I can benefit out of your labor.
  • The slaves in Saint-Dominigue were treated horribly by their landowners and suffered brutal conditions. As a result, there were frequent tensions and conflict between them.
  • I can't stand it! I want to be free.
  • The slaves working on the plantations demanded freedom, equality, and independence. This is how the Haitian Revolution began.
  • Challenge accepted.
  • On the May of 1791, there was a civil war between the gens de couleur and the white landowners.
  • Take this!
  • By 1793, Toussaint L'Ouverture built a strong, skillful army, consisting of enslaved Africans and maroons, which helped him establish an independent government.
  • All the Haitians! Independent!
  • By 1797, L' Ouverture's army controlled most of the island of St. Domingue.
  • We control all this now. Yay!!
  • After taking control of St. Domingue, L' Ouverture promulgated the Haitian Constitution of 1801 that granted equality and citizenship to all residents.
  • Everyone deserves to be treated equally.
