The slaves in Saint-Dominigue were treated horribly by their landowners and suffered brutal conditions. As a result, there were frequent tensions and conflict between them.
I can't stand it! I want to be free.
The slaves working on the plantations demanded freedom, equality, and independence. This is how the Haitian Revolution began.
On the May of 1791, there was a civil war between the gens de couleur and the white landowners.
By 1793, Toussaint L'Ouverture built a strong, skillful army, consisting of enslaved Africans and maroons, which helped him establish an independent government.
All the Haitians! Independent!
By 1797, L' Ouverture's army controlled most of the island of St. Domingue.
We control all this now. Yay!!
After taking control of St. Domingue, L' Ouverture promulgated the Haitian Constitution of 1801 that granted equality and citizenship to all residents.
Everyone deserves to be treated equally.
