One night in 500 CE, Queen Maya dreamt that a six tusked white elephant with a ruby head came down from heaven and impregnated her via her right side.
Ten months later, Queen Maya had a painless birth to Siddhartha. Siddhartha could immediately walk and talk, and lotus flowers grew after he took seven steps.Queen Maya died 7 days later.
King Suddhodana was told that his would be a king or a relgious leader, and he was determined he would make his son the next king. Suddhodana gave Siddharta a lavish life of luxury and never taught him religion. He gave him everything he ever wanted. He also gave him a wife called Yasodhara, and a son called Rahula.
Siddharta grew up not seeing sickness, pain or old age. He one day decided he wanted to see the outside world as he grew tired of his perfect life. His father allowed him to go out into the city, but ordered everyone to clear up anyone who was old, sick or dead. Instead he went a different way and saw an old, sick and dead man. (the four sights.)
As Siddharta went on, there was a holy man who seems calm amid the crowds and noise. Siddharta was curious as he was trying to understand truth. Siddharta soon realised his path of life was not of a life of lavish luxury, but was a life of understanding. The holy man was searching for this too.
Siddharta thought a way to overcome these issues. He realised that he couldn't learn about suffering when he was locked up in the palace walls, so he ran away and became an acetic; starving himself and experiencing suffering. he meditated and searched for an answer. This is known as the three marks of existence in Buddhism.
