"But you know what the view is now.. The statue of Liberty, the view from South Manhattan is the statue of Liberty, you can't beat that" (About 8:30)
Purpose: Jon Stewart is trying to show that through the tragedy of the horrible attacks of 9/11, there is some light, some sort of good in it all, a silver lining. That because we lost something, we still have so much to look at and be thankful for and celebrate
Jon is expressing how even though we had lost so much, we still had so much and that one event does not define us. He wants to show America that although it's suffered a great attack, it is still a nation of greatness, and that just because something has been taken away from it, there is so much more to celebrate, such as the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of America's freedom and prosperity.
Evidence - Compare and Contrast
"And we've already won... It's democracy, it's light... They live in chaos, and chaos can't sustain itself" (7:20)
Jon is stating how those who have destroyed what America had live in chaos and destruction, and how they value taking and destroying. He shows how those people have already lost and are going down the wrong path because of how chaos cannot sustain itself and how it will crumble.
Jon directly contrasts how the terrorists live in chaos and destruction by stating the amazing qualities that America has that separates it from them. He talks about how America has light, democracy, greatness, and how it cannot be broken by a force that is based simply on destruction. He shows that America is so much more and so much stronger than those who have tried to destroy it.
