Giuseppe Mazzini founded Little Italy, which was supposed to be an independent republic. He wanted his citizens to be free from the French. It was shut down but this led to others continuing his nationalist ideas.
While in office, Camilla Cavour improved the agriculture, had roads built, and encouraged commerce by supporting free trade among people. Cavour negotiated with Napoleon III to support Sardinia if they ever had a war. He later started a war and with the help of Napoleon, kicked out Austria and annexed Lombardy.
Giuseppe Garibaldi created an Italian Republic with the help of Cavour. He later recruited 1,000 red shirt soldiers and with ships and weapons from Cavour, Garibaldi conquered Sicily and later Naples. When Cavour saw him as a threat he sent Victor Emmanuel to stop him, and Garibaldi turned over Sicily and Naples to Emmanuel so he wouldn't get defeated.
