Quote 1: "I'm sending Inge to you today with the children, and she will be bringing you a cartoon of cigarettes."
This quote was said by Papa who was talking to Uncle Henrik on the phone. When Papa said "she will be bringing you a cartoon of cigarettes", cigarettes are Jewish family's that the Johansen's are trying to help get to saftey. Papa uses cigarettes as a code word becuase the Nazis are everywhere and they may be able to hear conversations over the phone, and they don't want to make them suspicions. This is important becuase if the Jewish people don't get to saftey they will be killed, so some people are trying to get them to saftey.
Halte!...Why are you running is said by German soldiers on the block. It means that the soldiers are on the block and the they do not want children to be running. What happened was that Annemarie and Ellen were racing and so the soldiers said it becuase Annemarie and Ellen were running and they got suspicious.
Quote 2: Halte!... Why are you running
Quote 3: ... it is much easier to be brave if you do not know everything
This quote is said by Uncle Henrik to Annemarie when Uncle Henrik is giving Annemarie a milking lesson. It is said because Annemarie is asking something that they are keeping secrect from her to protect her. The qoute means that if you know everything it will be harder to be brave, if you do not know everything it will be easier to be brave.
Quote 4: If any soldiers see you, you must pretend to be nothing more than a little girl. A silly, empty- headed little girl, taking lunch to a fisherman.
This qoute is said by Mrs. Johansen to Annemarie. She said it becuase Mr. Rosen dropped a really important package and she needs it to be delivered to him as fast as possible. If she didn't not get the package to Uncle Henrik her friends would have been caught by the German soldiers. She was told to be a silly little girl in the woods bringing her uncle lunch because then if she got stopped by the soldiers they would not see her as someone delivering something important.
