Storyboard Text

  • Many slaves got abused, even sexually abused. Even if a slave escaped their slave state they'd still be put up as a reward if found. The slaves had to get out of the country without getting caught, so people decided to help and formed the Underground Railroad.
  • A woman named Harriet Tubman created the Underground Railroad.  The Underground Railroad was a connection of antislavery houses for slaves to escape America. This is how the Underground Railroad would work.
  • The house owners would let the slaves in and have a place for them to hide just in case of the slave hunters checked the houses. The owners usually would also give them something to eat and drink, unless there were too many slaves.
  • To make sure all slaves and homeowners were safe they would also have somewhat of a code. If there was a blanket hanging or a lamp light, etc it could mean it was safe or not safe. Harriet wanted to make sure the slaves got out of America without getting caught.
  • If the salves weren't careful and got caught by a slave hunter, they'd be punished. Most of the time it would be wiping, but they could've done anything far worse. This is why the home owners were careful and came up with secret somewhat codes.
  • The Underground Railroad was successful and freed aproximatley seventy enslaved slaves. It took 13 trips, but it was still worth it. In Canada the salves were free and were actually allowed to do so much more things, for example own a house, get paid for working, and so many more things they weren't allowed to do in America.
