The setting of the story is in the future world where books are banned. The firemen start fires instead of putting them out and destroy all the books. The main fireman, Montag met this teenager named Clarisse while walking home one evening. The girl is very curious and loves to ask questions. But one day she just disappears, this makes Montag reevaluate his life choices.
On a job, Montag has to burn these elderly woman's books but she doe not want to get rid her books and would rather die than have her books burned. In result, the woman burns herself to death with her books. But before burning the books, Montag takes a couple to see what is so bad about them.
Montag's Cheif, Captian Beaty, finds out that Montag had taken some books to himself and that he was reading them. Beatty tries to convince Montag why the books are banned and read several quotes from books.
The novel hits a climax when Montag reads his wife and her friends a poem. The women are completely discussed, offended and leave in very angry moods, they threatened to file a report against him. Montag's wife, Mildred, turns Montag into the authorities.
Montag is forced to burn the books himself, but he does not agree with this so he fights back. In the end, Montag had to kill the chief and firemen to exscape. Montag escapes and runs away to a colony of people who love books.
With these people Montag wants to go Saint Luis and meet the book printer, to later produce books as well. At the end of the book, jets appear overhead and destroy the colony, leaving the survivors to find one another to regroup.
