Storyboard Text

  • When traveling to Tibet-Qinghal Plateau, today it is called the "Roof of the World." Its average elevation of 13,500 feet is more than 2 miles above sea level.  Two of China's major rivers begin in this area. The Huang He River also known as the Yellow River and the Chang Jiang also called the Yangtze River.

  • Now I'm in the Taklimakan Desert, it is considered one of the most dangerous deserts in the world. The name means "once you go in, you will not come out."  Some Legends say that about 300 cities are buried 600 feet beneath the sand dunes. A lot of desert winds may cause huge sandstorms.

  • I then traveled east to the Gobi Desert. It is one of the biggest deserts in the world. It has very few sand dunes and is stony. There is not much plant life. The plants that do grow are small.

  • I then visited The Northeastern Plain, which has warm summers and cold winters. There are two major rivers that often freeze in the winters creating roads for the people. The weather in this area is to cool for growing crops. Prairie grass is found in this area.

  • I then traveled to the North China Plain and discovered it is a flat region of grassland. It is often called "Land of the Yellow" because it has yellow silt covering the ground. Found in the Plain is the Huang He is the world's longest and muddiest river in the world. It is a good place to grow crops.

  • Next, I traveled to a wetter climate in the Chang Jiang Basins. I found the Chang Jiang, or Long River, is used to transport goods between eastern and western areas of this mild region. The climate in the Basins is warm and wet and very good for growing rice. The river starts in high western mountains, it flows though 3 flat plains and ends in a rich delta with fertile lands.
