  • In the summer in the 1930s a girl, Scout Finch and her brother Jem Finch are living in Maycomb County with their father, Atticus Finch, a successful lawyer in the Maycomb Court.
  • Climax
  • Exposition
  • Jem and Scout are under a lot of pressure, because Atticus has to defend a black man in court, and most of Maycomb County is racist and do not like blacks.
  • Conflict
  • Falling Action
  • Kids at school bully Jem and Scout, calling them names, saying that their father loves black people, and Jem and Scout get angry and try to defend their father. Atticus tells them that no matter what people say, you shouldn't let it get to you, it's the other people's problem
  • Rising Action
  • Atticus goes to the Tom Robinson trial, Jem and Scout also watch it, anxiously. Atticus is defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of rape. The other person on the other side is Mayella Ewell, the white girl who blamed Tom Robinson. Atticus does very well, proving that Mayella Ewell was lying. Jem is very confident his father will win, but he is wrong. The jury convicts Tom Robinson, he is said to be guilty
  • Jem and Scout are very angry, sad, and disappointed that their father lost the trial. Tom Robinson is shot, escaping jail.
  • At the end of the story, even though Jem and Scout are sad about the trial, their father explains to them that there is a bright side, because one man on the jury voted that Tom Robinson was innocent. That shows that slowly, but surely, people are starting to also defend blacks and not be racist.
