Rape destroys innocence and childhood. It can affect the victim emotionally and physically. Rape ruins lives, breaks trust and heightens anxiety.
Being a victim of rape can often lead to thoughts of self blame, constant depression and feelings of paranoia.
Rape is called "the most underreported violent crime in America", and in a large national survey of American women, only 16% of the rapes (approximately one out of every six) had ever been reported to the police.
Every two minutes, somewhere in America, someone is sexually assaulted.
It's not just women. 30% of rape victims are male, and over the course of a lifetime 1, in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys will be a victim of childhood sexual abuse.
EFFECTS OF RAPE
94% of women who are raped experience post-truamatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms during the two weeks following the rape.9 30% of women report PTSD symptoms 9 months after the rape.
33% of women who are raped contemplate suicide. 13% of women who are raped attempt suicide.
Long term effects can include pregnancy, (if the victim is female) PTSD, constant paranoia, depression, strained relationships, and problems and work, home and school.
