Storyboard Text

  • Melba's home in Little Rock, Arkansas.
  • Protagonist (Melba and friends/family)
  • The hardcore segregationist were like a pack of wolves and Andy was the alpha male.
  • Antagonist (segregationist/bullies)
  • Separate but equal!! Person vs. Society
  • Conflict: Many people in Little Rock believe and support segregation. So when Melba and other students started integrating there was controversy and arguments.
  • POV This book is written in Melba's perspective. 1st person. Its written through hers eyes and shows her experiences as they happen to her.
  • Theme: I think the theme of this story is that nothing is ever going to change or become equal unless someone goes through it and makes the change first. Melba took the opportunity to integrate even though it was a tough challenge. It was a step towards making things equal.
  • Foreshadowing: I noticed foreshadowing when there were threats saying segregationist were going to do something to get at the families of integrators. Soon after Melbas mother lost her job.
  • Mood: this book and its scenes make me feel sympathetic for Melba and the others and it shocks me because of the things they endured.
  • The balls of flame zapped past Melba, just about burning her clothing.
  • Tone: the tone is fearful, sadness, and dread. But also boldness and bravery and strength
