Christopher Columbus set sail to find a shortcut to India.
I will find a shortcut to India and become rich!
Columbus did find land, but it wasn't India. He believed it to be India for a long time and even called the natives their "Indians." Soon, he and other colonists discovered that the land they found wasn't India, but a land that was brand new to Europeans. They called it the "New World."
We found new land!
This is England's land now.
Word got around in Europe quickly, with countries and nations all over Europe sending ships to claim and colonize land in the "New World." The countries to claim the most land in the "New World" were England, Spain, and Portugal.
I'm going to be rich!
There are many reasons why settlers from Europe decided to come to the Americas. Those reasons can be summed up in 3 words. Gold, God, and Glory, otherwise known as, "the three G's". Gold refers to the people that came from Europe to become rich, god referring to religious beliefs and Christians wanting to revert the natives into Christians, and glory referring to power, as in claiming land.
I'm going to convert the natives into Christians!
I'm going to claim land for my country!
Yes, now we can finally practice our religion in peace without getting persecuted.
While there were many reasons why people from Europe moved to the "New World", one of the many reasons were because many were seeking religious freedom and escaping punishment from England and other countries.
As the colonies, 13 in total, grew and developed, trade became necessary and a part of daily life. Many places traded with one another, such as the colonists trading goods and supplies to England. These places created routes throughout the Atlantic ocean that created a triangle shape, hence its name, the "Triangle trade." Many benefited from these trades, such as the colonists in the Americas and the people back in England, but many were harmed by it. Natives were originally used as slaves to grow cash crops, but they were dying out, so colonists used Africans as slaves instead to farm cash crops. All these things happened during Europe's colonization of the Americas.
