The setting of the story is when ponyboy curtis leaves the movie theatre to walk home by himself. When a member of the rival gang (The Socs) jump him. He is saved when fellow Greasers come to rescue.
There is a rivalry between two social classes: The Socials and The Greasers. The Socs are wealthy and live on the east side of town, and the Greasers are poor and live on the west side of town.
Johnny kills a Soc to protect one of his friends. They run to Dally and he gives them some money to leave town. While Johnny and ponyboy were hiding out things got worse back home. Tension rises between the Socs and the Greasers. They hide out in an old church, which later catches fire. Johnny, Dally and Ponyboy try to rescue the children that were trapped inside. Ponyboy passes out from the fumes, Dally escapes unharmed and Johnny breaks his back and gets badly burned.

When I stepped out into the bright sunlight from the darkness of the movie house, I had only two things on my mind: Paul Newman and a ride home.
Johnny dies from his injuries.
The Greasers win the rumble. Dally ends up being shot by the Police.
In the end Ponyboy recovers from emotional and physical conflict that occurs. The Novel ends by Ponyboy writing the opening line.
