crops was grown to sell for profit. they produced so much to grain they became known as the "Bread Basket Colonies".
In the port cities many farmers shipped their goods through Philadelphia and NewYork.
Owning land was very important to the colonies. the owners ran their estate like tiny kingdom. people who farmed the land had to pay rent.
