  • Ashley Adams' Case Study Video MAT 5320
  • Good Morning! Today, we will be discussing shape names and their characteristics.
  • Shapes
  • We are going to start by looking at a circle. How many sides...
  • I am teaching class, suddenly Johnny screams out, pushes his chair into Molly's desk, and bangs his hands on the desk.  The other students become startled.
  • I don’t want to do this. I don’t like school! I hate being here. I don’t like you or you!
  • Circle
  • Scenario One: I make a threat that I am not willing to uphold. This will not work because if I am inconsistent and do not follow through then the inappropriate behavior will continue.
  • You will lose ALL of your Recess, PAT, and anything else if you do not calm down. Okay, Okay, if you quit now I will give you all of your time back.
  • I don't care if I get Recess!
  • Circle
  • Mrs. Ashley, we are scared.
  • STOP SCREAMING AND SHOUTING LIKE A 2 YEAR OLD. YOU NEED TO QUIT ACTING LIKE A TODDLER
  • Scenario Two: I get angry with the child. I get into a screaming argument with the child. I upset my other students as well. During this scenario, I have let the child win and he knows he can get under my skin. I have upset the rest of my class.
  • Circle
  • Scenario Three: I get into close proximity with the child and on his level. I use I-Messages, eye contact, and remain assertive. I have the rest of my class safe and away from the upset student. I explain that he will have a consequence, but that tomorrow is a new day and what my expectations are.
  • I had a bad night. My dad isn't staying with us anymore since he hurt my mom this weekend. I am really tired.
  • Johnny, what can I do to help you? Why are you upset?Look at Molly and Jay, how do you think your behavior made them feel? This behavior is not acceptable for our classroom, remember the rules we agreed to at the beginning of the year.  You will have consequences for your actions today, but tomorrow is a fresh start.
  • Circle
  • I am insisting that Johnny follows through and talks to his peers. He will also get a consequence that was previously agreed upon at the beginning of the year.
  • Okay class, you may take your seats again. Johnny would like to speak with you.
  • Circle
  • Mrs. Ashley said I needed to be responsible for my actions, so I am sorry that I pushed my chair into your desk and screamed.
  • Thank you Johnny. It scared us.
  • MAKE ME STOP SHOUTING!!
  • I am scared. Johnny and Mrs. Ashley keep screaming.
