Hi class! Today we're learning about reconstruction in the south after the civil war.
Reconstruction lasted for 12 years after the civil war. The biggest change In the south was that slaves were free.
Reconstruction was the period after the war where the south was in the process of rebuilding from the damage of the war. Before reconstruction took place, President Lincoln was assassinated. Andrew Johnson then took over.
The 13th Amendment abolished slavery. The 14th amendment gave citizenship to former slaves. The 15th Amendment gave black men the right to vote.
The black codes were laws created to restrict former slaves from freedom which was just as bad as slavery. This infuriated the North. Congress then passed the Civil Rights Act that took control over Reconstruction.
The Ku Klux Klan was founded in 1866 and was group that discriminated against blacks and whites that were siding with the blacks. Congress passed the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871 to stop the spread.
