At the funeral, everyone has silent feuds with each other because they don't want to make El patron angry. All of the Alacrans have feuds with each other for past reasons. Almost all of the Alacrans have feuds with Matt because he is a clone, El patron's clone. none of the Alacrans have tried to solve their problems because they know El patron has ears anywhere and he is capable of more that anyone can imagine.
At the funeral, Matt goes to pay respects to El Viejo when the priest starts to get mad that he is there and a clone. Maria jumps in the conversation and gets Matt out of it. when Matt and Maria locked eyes they both forgave each other mostly Maria forgiving Matt for "killing" fur-ball. I think this is a big event in the story because if it weren't for Maria coming back and forgiving Matt, Matt might have fled to Aztlan, but Matt could never leave Maria, because he loves her.
"Eejits; sentenced a lifetime of silence."
Matt shows maria to the tunnels so they could talk without being listened to. When they go through the tunnels, maria tells Matt all about her experience at the boarding school and how religion had let her to forgive Matt relating him to the wolf in the old story. Maria starts to get close to Matt and they both know they love each other even though maria knows that falling in love with a clone is forbidden. When maria stats to talk about religion and if Matt actually has a soul, Matt gets interested in religion.
When maria and Matt reach the end of the tunnels they go into a room where they start to talk. All of a sudden they hear Felicia and tom walk into the room and they hide and listen to what they say. Felicia and tom walk over to the camera's and start looking through the camera's for maria and Matt, and tom gets mad. While they look, tom brings up fur-ball and Felicia says that she saw Matt put fur-ball into the shack where she went in and fed the alcohol bottle to fur-ball and killed him. Maria is shook and is so upset she does not understand what just happened. This part is important because without Felicia saying she did it, maria would never of believed Matt.
After all of the chaos Matt leaves for the Oasis, so he can relax alone. While Matt leaves with he horse he see's eejits and calls the "brother eejits" as a religious person would say because thy treat everyone with respect. I think this is the part of the book where Matt splits way from the evil trail of El patron and becomes his own person. From maria and her new religious way of looking at Matt, Matt starts to question how evil he really is. Matt realizes evil from good and he decides to one day free the eejits.
I think what maria's look on equalization had a major influence on Matt because Matt started to realize how evil having eejits is. Matt realizes the bad things he has done in the past and accepts the fact that El patron deep down is an evil man. If Matt had never realized the difference between good and evil and which way he wanted to follow, Matt could have ended up another El patron and had made everyone around him suffer.
