Hello. My name is Nimkiins (Little thunder) and I am going to tell you my story about a teacher who changed how I feel about school.I always felt different because english is not my first language, I felt anxious and left out. I did not have friends in the class who understood my language and I did not feel like I fit in. I was always quiet and did not answer questions.
My old teachers thought that i was stupid and that I did not answer them because I did not understand. I did understand, I just didn’t know how to tell them the answer so that they would.
In my classroom there are pictures of successful first nations people. We learn about historical events that have happened to my people and we learn about who we are. We have teachings and cultural circles, we smudge and there are elders in the school available to talk to me.
When I have an assignment to do, my teacher understands what I need to be successful. Sometimes she will talk to me to explain what the requirements of the assignment are. Sometimes she will bring my sister in to talk to me about it in my language.
She gives me extra time to think about what I want to say. It is hard Sometimes she will listen to my thoughts and write them down for me. I have to tell her in full sentences though. If I need to plan things she gives me a graphic organizer to help get my ideas down. A lot of the time I get to use technology because when I type things out it helps me to spell easier and I can see the issues in my writing with the ‘grammarly’ extension on google.
I think that...
School is not as stressful for me anymore. I feel better and I am gaining a voice in the classroom. I can look forward to learning more, getting better with the English language and having the support I need in the classroom.
