"It hadn't occurred to me that my mother would die. Until she was dying, the thought had never entered my mind. She was monolithic and insurmountable, the keeper of my life"(Strayed 20). Cheryl was very close to her mother, so when she got cancer and died just 7 weeks after diagnosis, she was devastated.
"First we smoked it, then we snorted it. But we would never shoot it! We said. Absolutely not. Then we shot it. It was good. It was like something inordinately beautiful and out of this world" (Strayed 53). Cheryl had become a regular user of Heroin with a man named Joe, who she met and had a relationship with while still being married to her husband Paul. This led to their divorce.
