  • What is thermal equilibrium?
  • Thermal equilibrium occurs because heat loss is equal to heat gain.
  • So when 2 objects that are at different temperatures

  • Thermal energy travels the best through solids because the particles are close together. When heat meets another object, the particles move and go another, and that's how the heat travels.
  • And conductors like metal allow thermal energy to travel faster than an insulator material like plastic.
  • How do we know the rate of how fast thermal energy transfers?
  • The mathematical equation for rate of thermal energy transfer is Rate = k•A•(T1 - T2)/d
  • Well, first we look at different variables like materials that it travels through. There's also area and distance.
  •  If the thickness of the material through which heat is transferred is increased by a factor of 2, then the rate of heat transfer is decreased by a factor of 2
  • Exactly!
  • So if the thickness of a material increases, the rate of heat transfer decreases!
