  • In 1690 in Boston, Massachusetts, Hester Prynne just got out of jail for committing the crime of adultery. The Puritan society has forced her to wear a scarlet letter on her chest for the rest of her life because of her sin. She has a baby, whose father she refuses to name. While she stands on the scaffold, she spots her long lost husband, Roger Chillingworth.

  • Hester and her daughter, Pearl, move into a cottage on the outskirts of the town, where she makes a living as an extremely talented seamstress. Her long lost husband, Roger Chillingworth, comes to town and attaches himself to the father of Pearl, Dimmesdale. After a long period of time, people stop starring at her scarlet letter and judging her because of her sin, and they start to view it as strength rather than an ignominy. They say it stand for "able." Pearl has turned into an angry child, mostly because other kids ridicule her for her mother's sin.

  • Hester and Pearl find Dimmesdale in the woods, and Hester sends her daughter to play in the stream while she talks to him. Hester confesses that Chillingworth is her husband. Hester and Dimmesdale start talking more and see each other in a new light. They agree to board a ship to move to England after Dimmesdale gives his Election Sermon.

  • With lots of energy, Dimmesdale gives his best sermon ever according to many of the townspeople. Once he finished his sermon he calls Pearl and Hester to stand with him on the scaffold. After they join him, he ripped open his shirt and revealed an A that he engraved in his skin. Dimmesdale falls to the ground and dies. 
  • The citizens of the town start discussing the A they saw on Dimmesdale's chest. They townspeople converse their different opinions and theories about the letter imprinted in his flesh. A year later, Chillingworth dies, and he leaves all his riches to Pearl, making her extremely wealthy. Hester and Pearl finally board the ship to move to New England. 
  • After many years, Hester moves back to the cottage her and Pearl used to live in. She still wears the scarlet letter as a part of her identity, and she continues her work as a seamstress. She sews baby clothes, which leads the readers to believe that Pearl is still staying in Europe, and she is married and has children. Now, women come to Hester for advice, and they respect her. Subsequently, Hester dies, and she is buried near Dimmesdale's grave.
