I'll prove them wrong, I'll catch a huge fish some day
Man vs Man Santiago feels ridiculed by other fishermen because he hasn't been able to catch any fish in eighty four days
Should I have really done that?
Man vs Man Despite what the fisherman say, he's determined to prove them wrong and sets out on a fishing trip.
Man vs Self During his battle with the marlin, Santiago's left hand cramps up and he becomes very weak, hungry and nauseous. He scolds his body for betraying him.
I love and respect you, but I shall kill you before this day ends.
Man vs Self The old man suffers through a great amount of guilt over catching the marlin and eventually wishes he never caught it at all.
Man vs Nature Santiago fights off the forces of nature working against him like the sharks trying to eat the marlin he just got
Man vs. Nature The old man spent three days trying to attain the biggest marlin he had ever seen and wanted nothing more than to catch it
