  • Me too!
  • Storming the Bastille
  • Get back over here!
  • Get all the weapons from Bastille!
  • The Estates General was an assembly of representatives from all three estates in France. This meeting was called to decide whether the nobility (2nd estate) should be taxed.
  • March on Versailles
  • Where's the King and Queen?
  • Third Estate delegates found themselves locked out of their meeting room. They broke down a door to an indoor tennis court, pledging to stay there until they had drawn up a new constitution. This pledge became known as the Tennis Court Oath.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • You're coming with me to the guillotine!
  • On July 14, a mob searching for gunpowder and arms stormed the Bastille, a Paris prison. The mob over-whelmed the guard and seized control of the building.
  • Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte
  • I am Napoleon Bonaparte, and I will bring an end to the French Revolution!
  • In October 1789, thousands of Parisian women rioted over the rising price of bread. They marched on Versailles with weapons. They demanded that the National Assembly take action to provide bread. Then they turned their anger on the king and queen. They broke into the palace, killing some of the guards. The women demanded that Louis and Marie Antoinette return to Paris.
  • Please believe me. I didn't do anything.
  • The Reign of Terror was a dark and violent period of time during the French Revolution. Radicals took control of the revolutionary government. They arrested and executed anyone who they suspected might not be loyal to the revolution.
  • Oh no! This person is a Jacobin!
  • This Reign of Terror has got to stop!
  • Troops under Napoleon's command surrounded the national legislature and drove out most of its members. The lawmakers who remained then voted to dissolve the Directory. In its place, they established a group of three consuls, one of whom was Napoleon. Napoleon quickly took the title of first consul and assumed the powers of a dictator.
