after emancipation he moved with his family but was to poor to go to school so he worked in a salt furnace and the coal mine at 9.
(1872) wanting nothing more but to be educated, he enrolled at Hampton and normal agriculture institute and worked as a janitor to pay for it

the headmaster of this school, General Samuel C. Armstrong gave booker a scholarship for his hard work
in 1881, the Alabama legislature approved for a "colored" school (Tuskegee university). Armstrong was asked to assign a white man to run the school but chose Washington because of his integrity
by the time of his death, (November 17th 1915 in Tuskegee, Alabama) there were more than 100 well equipped buildings, at least 1500 students, staff of 200 teaching 38 trades
