  • on April 5th 1856, Booker T Washington was born into slavery in a small hut in Franklin,Virginia
  • well kid, your pretty smart and hard working. what about a scholarship?
  • I try sir, i appreciate this more then you will ever know
  • after emancipation he moved with his family but was to poor to go to school so he worked in a salt furnace and the coal mine at 9.
  • (1872) wanting nothing more but to be educated, he enrolled at Hampton and normal agriculture institute and worked as a janitor to pay for it
  • well thank Mr. Booker T Washington, hes the main reason we are here and have this opportunity
  • mannn we have everything we need in here and more!
  • the headmaster of this school, General Samuel C. Armstrong gave booker a scholarship for his hard work
  • in 1881, the Alabama legislature approved for a "colored" school (Tuskegee university). Armstrong was asked to assign a white man to run the school but chose Washington because of his integrity
  • by the time of his death, (November 17th 1915 in Tuskegee, Alabama) there were more than 100 well equipped buildings, at least 1500 students, staff of 200 teaching 38 trades
