Gladiators were forced to kill their opponents and if the opponents were lucky, the Emperor was feeling generous and showed the gladiator a thumbs down instead of a thumbs up.
Fun Fact: The Colosseum could seat up to 55,000 grown men. Close up sat the Emperor and his family, then the common citizens, and then the poor citizens, after them sat the women and occasionally the non-citizens.
I'm so sorry, friend.
Personally, I think its a thumbs UP!
People bet on gladiators and the gamblers would often cheat and bring gladiators gifts to ensure that they would win. if a gladiator won, they could become famous and rich.
A thumbs up meant the gladiator should eliminate (kill) his opponent. While a thumbs down meant to spare his opponent's life.
You can't kill my son!!!!
I think that hottie Bob Junior will win!
No way! Bob Junior is like, SO HOT!!! OMG!
Bob Junior will obviously win!
Here Juno and her husband Jupiter are depicted arguing over which Gladiator will win and are placing bets.
