  • Exposition
  • Conflict
  • Rising Action
  • Eliezer describes his life in Sighet, Transylvania. He lives with his mother, sisters, and father. Elie's father is seen as a trusted member of the community. Elizer describes his mentor, Moishe the beadle.
  • Climax
  • The conflict starts to show up when German officers arrive in Sighet. Elie's mentor Moishe is sent to a camp and escapes to explain the terrible ways of the Germans.
  • Falling Action
  • Elizer's house is turned into part of a Ghetto, a secluded area just for Jews. After some time living in the Ghetto, the Jews are evacuated to be sent to camps. The Jews believe the camps are safe, they soon learn the truth.
  • Resolution
  • Elie's family arrive in Auschwitz, where they are separated with their belongings taken from them. They are forced to work, starved, suffer harsh weather.  If they disobey the orders they are beaten and sometimes killed.
  • After a few months prisoners are woken up early to walk, clothes are thrown at them. The Germans send the Jews on a death march, while it snows. They walk day and night in the cold, no food or water. Finally they arrive at another camp with only 12 out of the 100 prisoners.
  • The prisoners are allowed to rest, many of the sick are taken away, most likely to the crematorium. This includes Elie's father, who he assumes is taken to the crematorium because he was very ill. Shortly after he loses his father Eliezer is evacuated.
