- Protect the union- avoid political factions -Stay out of European conflict -presidents should only stay for two terms
Development of Political Parties
We should have a party that believes in a strict understanding of the constitution!
I think we should have a party that thinks the opposite
How the Jay Treaty began is that Washington sent John Jay to keep peace between them and the British. The problem was, the British refused to allow Americans to trade with the French. As a result, the French went to war with the British. Even some Americans disagreed with the Treaty too.
Washington thought he should leave the presidency for two reasons. One, was that he said a president should only serve two terms, and he made multiple mistakes and more problems were coming.
Alien and Sedition Acts
Alien and Sedition Acts John Adams
There was Federalists and Democratic-Republicans. The Key leaders of the two parties were, Alexander Hamilton (Leader of the Federalists) and Thomas Jefferson (Leader of the Democratic-Republicans). They were very different in many ways. First off, Federalists were different because they supported Britain, they believed in a loose understanding of the US Constitution, and was for a national bank. On the other hand, Democratic-Republicans were the opposite. Except they supported the French.
Would we be able to see the minister?
Adams sent three people to France to fix the problem that already started about the Jay Treaty. The three people who came to France were, Charles Pinckney, John Marshall, and Elbridge Gerry. That's where the Americans met 3 French agents (X,Y,Z). As a result, the agents made the Americans pay $250,000 bribe plus a $12M loan to see the minister. Most of the Americans reactions was that they were angry and wanted war against the French, but Adams said no. Even to his fellow federalists.
You would have to pay $250,000 plus a $12M loan.
These two acts called the Alien and Sedition acts is what ruined Adams' career. The reason why, is that the acts took away people's right to have independence. The Alien act means the president was authorized to deport any resident alien as dangerous to the piece and the safety of the United States. The Sedition act meant, it was illegal to say anything false about the government.
In the election of 1800, the federalists lost both houses of Congress and Jefferson won the presidency. Later on in the passing of the Judiciary Act of 1801, Adams and congress attempted to use his authority under the act to pack the courts with federalists Judicial appointments.
