Muhammad was born around 570 in Mecca to a Merchant tribe.
He was orphaned by the time he was 6 years old and was raised by his uncle, Abu Talib, who taught him about merchantry.
Young Muhammad worked for a wealthy widow named Khadija, whom he later married. Muhammad became a respected merchant who was very concerned with the needs of the poor.
While meditating in the hills of Mecca, Muhammad received messages from the one true God, Allah, sent by the archangel, Gabriel.
Muhammad began preaching to his clan and gained a small band of followers in Mecca. He compiled his teachings into a book called the Quran. His teachings frustrated the wealthy people of Mecca.
In 622, Muhammad fleed Mecca to Yathrib with the help of Ali. The city became known as "the city of the prophet," Medina. His migration became known as the "hijra."
