Chief inquisitor, Father Vincenzo Maculano da Firenzuo began the inquisition of Galileo on April 12, 1633.
Galileo was ordered to turn himself in for believing the earth revolves the sun, opposing the Catholic belief that the earth is the center of the universe.
Galileo denied that he actually believed this, but rather was discussing the possibility.
His argument didn't work and he was declared a heretic. The book of Dialogues of Galileo Galilei was banned from the public and Galileo spent the rest of his life on house arrest.
It took the Catholic Church 300 years to admit that Galileo was correct.
